Wrong again. There are two types of PTFE, for gas and for water. The gas tape is thicker and costs an arm and a leg.

Its the olive which seals the joint by being crushed by the fitting when its tightened up.

PTFE tape is most commonly used on rad valves where they screw into the rad.

You're not supposed to disconnect it from the washing machine, but disconnect the other end, from the u-bend. Water won't come gushing out (unless you do it when the washing machine's on, which would be really silly)

it would actually be a bit more boring than you'd think, 'cos water would only come out when it drains, and not at particularly high pressure. If, say,a dog was involved and it got hold of the spouting pipe end in its mouth and ran round in circles with it thus preventing the hapless amateur plumber doing anything about it that would probably make it slightly more watchable.
