DIY roof repair help

The roof/ceiling in the rental I live in has wooden beams, but as you can (hopefully) see from the photo they are not well sealed against the elements. There is no way the landlord will fix this - or even accept it is a problem - wondering how I might fix this (at low cost and not in a way that would draw the landlord's attention). Anyone any ideas? I was (in desperation) thinking something like blu-tack (albeit not a blue coloured one!) But maybe there is some king of clear coat/a glue etc that would work? It's not cosmetic, at night in the winter this room fills with toxic air from people burning wood in the neighbourhood.

Moving out is not an option, there are no sensibly priced apartments where I live (not in the UK).

Definitely not blutack!

As a quick easy solution I'd say a silicone sealant and go for CT1 which is weatherproof etc.
Go on YouTube for videos of how to use if you're not a DIYer.

The gap/cracking running vertically up the wooden beam. I wondered about something like silicone. I've no DIY experience whatsoever, but as Binky mentions hopefully Youtube can come to the rescue,

No DIY experience, blimey !

It's not difficult to run a bit of silicone up it. Squirt on, if messy get some tissue to hand. Wet finger, then run finger over the applied silicone, then wipe excess off finger with tissue. Bit messy but you'll get a good finish. You could go all out and get the little 'smoothing tool', but a wet finger works.

I've never owned a property sadly, so there hasn't ever really been any need to do DIY. [Now I do own a property, but that's a whole other story...] Either that or I've spent too much time riding bikes ;-)

Does it need repairing? Loss of heat? cosmetic? Drafts?

If it isn't having a negative impacting you can you leave it.

If it's getting worse then silicone/calk will probably not last and is allowing it to get worse until it's bad enough that landlord will want to fix it.

No idea as it's in Russian or some such. Any silicone sealant will work - you may need a 'gun' to apply it is you are getting a large tube. I'd possibly look for a small tube from the local DIY store (B&Q if in UK)

As I said in the original post I get a build up of smoke in the room overnight in the winter (from people burning wood in the neighbourhood). The landlord will never admit it needs fixing, and the housing situation where I live is nightmarish so moving not really an option. And it's not just our landlord, generally here anything that goes wrong is assumed to be for the tenants to resolve - no meaningful protection on offer to tenants.
