Coming back to the OP, the answer simply is yes. If you use up all the free glycogen in the system then your body can't just switch to burning fat instead (unfortunately )

Over on YACF, Chris S and fboab are experimenting with a very low carb diet (while continuing audaxing) and finding that they are slowly adapting their bodies to burn fat for energy, but it is an adaption that takes time. If you fancy reading more the thread is here: -

If/when it does happen (on a ride that is) I can thoroughly recommend Torq Banoffee flavoured gels with caffeine as a quick "get out of jail free" card.
I don't normally like gels and don't use them on a regular basis, but usually carry one of those for emergencies. Think of it like a "reserve tank" though.... it won't last for ever and you need to be eating proper food again SOON, if you wait until your body starts shutting down a second time you are in deep s..t
I have often wondered this with regard to self supporting expeditions. For instance if you were heading into the Arctic for a month and needing to carry all your own food. Would it be wise to fatten yourself up before setting off, and if so by how much? for instance 1 pound of body fat = 3500 calories, as opposed to 3500 calories of food (+ fuel to cook it) carried on your back or towed behind on a sledge may weigh 10 - 12 pound. Now clearly it wouldn't be wise to pump yourself up to 20+ stone and carry no food, but is there an optimum weight of body fat to be carried when heading off into the wilderness.
I'm sure I read somewhere that Ranulph Fiennes does bulk up for expeditions. In the arctic you burn around 9,000 calories a day walking, towing a sledge and keeping warm and you cannot tow that amount of food. So he bulks up before and loses weight whilst on expedition, recovering afterward.
Brian Blessed, when he attempted Everest in 1993 burnt so many calories that his weight dropped to around 8 stone (51kgs).
