Thanks for the advice everyone - I'm still mulling it over at the moment, although I did my first fettle (bars down by one spacer, seatpost up a little) without.

The one I'm considering is this, with a set of these...

That looks good John and will do most of the fasteners on a bike. You'll need a bigger one too if you tackle some jobs - Campag Ultratorque cranks require 31 Ft lb for example.

9 out of 10 bike shops do not have torque wrenches and the few that do rarely use them unless they're reassembling high end suspension forks.

I've got one for the car but I've never used one on my bikes. And they don't click and rattle, nothing works loose and I've never (well, not often:blush:) stripped a thread. If you're happier using a torque wrench though, go for it.
