A social networking site? Whatever happened to the phone, ringing up your mates and going out?

It still happens, the going out.
But instead of calling each person, you just do a group email or something and it saves time.

The wall is so someone can leave you a message. But not like an email where no-one else can see it

Actually I was going to anticipate: someone might ask me "is that you in your avatar?".

Well I'd have liked to answer 'yes' but no alas! I haven't got a fast enough spaceship. Hopefully there are folks of some sort in that avatar, billions of them, but they're sadly out of touch: the small matter of 12 million light-years away....
