Well, here's the latest: I took it along to the iPod doctor at the Manchester Arndale Apple store. When the bloke had got over his amazement at the good condition of my iPod and then at the fact that I had actually managed to change the battery without wrecking the case, he plugged it in and sure enough nothing happened. So then he put it into disc mode and plugged it into a Mac and as suggested by Sheddy earlier in this thread it seemed to unfreeze. This reformatted the iPod to Mac though, so then he had to reconnect it to a PC. At that point he said it was ready to go and all I had to do was connect it to my own PC and re load it with all the music. Got home later, connected it up and.... nothing. So using my new-found confidence I also put it into disc mode and that did the trick, it then set about a re-sync, which took nearly an hour. Once that was finished I put the iPod back into normal mode and it worked.

So just as an experiment I moved a few songs around on my iTunes and reconnected it to see what would happen and..... nothing! Once again the computer "saw" the iPod but iTunes didn't so nothing happened. So now I need to work out how to get it to sync by manually triggering it - anybody got any ideas?

Oh for god's sake wake up and smell the coffee! Apple are taking you for a ride.
It "suddenly" packs up, and then you take it a specialist iPod repair centre, the need for the existence of is somewhat a mystery for a start, but who then find that, lo and behold, it works *when you plug it into a MAC!* What a surprise!
That's funny, isn't it?
You don't think, that just maybe, they want you to ... shock horror... buy a mac??

I'm planning on getting an ipod classic soon but would prefer not to use itunes. can you recommed some alternatives? i've been looking into mediamonkey and sharepod as possible options so far.
I use Winamp, it's excellent and much easer than iTunes, you have total control - http://www.winamp.com/

itunes for windows seems to be far more buggy than itunes for mac. if having itunes and an ipod are particularly important, it makes sense to go mac given the other advantages (not least that you can dual boot in windows).

there are plenty of other mp4/4 players on the market that work with other players on pc. apple's advice to people to buy a mac is, of course, commercial sense. but that's not to say that, if you must have an ipod, a mac isn't the perfect companion…
