I find one of the best parts of cycling rather than motoring to work is the friendly relaxed attitude (in general) of other cyclists ( something I also find when I'm on the canal network). It bothers me when people ignore you but as yet it's never made me cry  boo hoo

I've mentioned this in a post recently but there is one cyclist who appears on my commute and he never acknowledges my nod. However, when I go out for my Sunday jaunt I've seen him a couple of times and he acknowledges me. The main difference I can tell on Sunday is that I don't wear an helmet.

I get ignored a lot by 'racing cyclists' when I'm on my road bike in full lycra. Wouldn't let it bother you, some people are just stuck up themselves somewhat.

To acknowledge all cyclists on busy roads is not really possible or practical. I'm one who really concentrates when riding and quite frankly am unaware of who may be passing in the other direction, although I know somebody is there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whatever bike I'm on I'll lift my fingers from the bars to acknowledge another rider if its out in the sticks. Some respond, some don't. I don't take it personally.

Roadies aren't always the worst offenders either. I was having an evening pootle around the lanes on my road bike when I caught up with a husband and wife pair, matching Specialized hybrids, matching helmets and hi-hi-hi viz jackets (it was 30 f***king degrees!) and about 3 inches from the kerb. These are quiet lanes and its not uncommon to exchange pleasantries with pedestrians, never mind a fellow cyclist. So I ventured a full 'good evening' to be polite. Not a response, no eye contact. Nothing. Maybe they hadn't heard. I slowed a little and said 'Good evening' again - nope, they were actually deliberately blanking me. Why would anyone do that? I wan't so much angry as baffled. Nowt so queer as folk.

I was once barged off the road by the local 'chain gang'! I knew they were catching up behind me, but I had a lorry parked in front of me. As I overtook the lorry, at least three of the riders slammed into me with their shoulders/thighs. None of us came off, but they just carried on as if nothing had happened.
I can understand that those further back in the pack were probably just blindly following the leader, but the road was straight and wide, so they must have had clear sight of me as they approached. I think I shouted something like "We're all on the same side!", but not one of them even acknowledged me.

To be completely fair, these guys particpate in cycling as a sport. They are in their zone. Have you ever played a sport where you are completely ingrossed in what you are doing? Do you ever see a tennis player, footballer etc thank the ball boy/member of the crowd for handing back the ball? Of course not.

Has your mind been elsewhere when walking along and it's taken a while for to reply or acknowledge someone trying to get you attention? On a bike, by the time your brain has kicked into gear the moment has gone.

To be honest I was surprised that any of them noticed us, didn't you see the  at the end of the post...

 some roadies take them selves far to seriously...

Should have caught them up and gone kamikaze on their asses, send them all tumbling!

I find that most cyclists acknowledge me without prompting no matter what bike i'm on, except on the commute hardly any do there it seems to be an rural v urban thing, however sometimes I find mtb riders blank me when I'm on the road bike. Me I say hello to anyone and IMO if you can't spare that second to nod you're going too slow on the rest of you're ride.

Weekdays are definately more stoney-faced than weekends, although there's one who always says morning when he's overtaking me.

The best 'social' day must have been the early may bank holiday. I went off across Cheshire on my folding bike and met dozens of cyclists going the other way, mostly groups, including a few serious goups in matching lycra. The people at the head of the groups all said hello.

To be fair, they are racing and have other things on their mind than passing the time of day.

Sorry, I haven't read the thread, but I get the gist. I'm getting tired of paranoid hybridists feeling sorry for themselves that other cyclists aren't enthusiastically waving HELLO all the time.

I ride an MTB, a mudguard equipped road bike and a carbon Dolan road bike, and (here it is), I do not ever wave at cyclists who I do not consider to be 'into' the sport.

OK?

Get over it.
