Do racing cyclist ignore you ?

I find that 90% of riders acknowledge me whatever bike I'm on. I was slogging up a local hill a while back on my hybrid and was overtaken by one of the local clubs (oswestry olympians) as if I was standing still. Almost every one of them gave me some sort of greeting as they passed although they were all working their way up. It was quite encouraging and helped with my eventual decision to start to ride with a group. However sometimes people ignore me and sometimes I am struggling too much to reply (usually obvious - gasping for breath and red in face ). I don't let it worry me, after all I am out on the bike by my own choice and could always take the car - but there again it's very rare for another car driver to give me a friendly wave as they pass

I sometimes give a friendly hello when I overtake riders in full club lycra who are out training. They blank me, but wouldn't you if you had just been passed by a solo cyclist on a Specialised Sirrus Sport and you were on your £5k carbon Cevelo. The pleasure of briefly meeting them is definitely all mine .

But having said that I don't acknowledge chavs on MTBs on the road or pavement. If I'm a ped on the pavement I make it hard for them to get by me as they shouldn't be on the pavement as Magna's clip shows. I'll give any other half committed looking cyclist a nod or a lift of the hand off the bars but I don't go over board.

Rarely do I either.Im fed up with being polite for years to people and being ignored.

I say hello to everyone who I pass or I am passed by, if they
acknowledge me it is up to them, but its nice to be nice .
But I did notice today it was only those on MTB I was acknowleded by, I will have to take notice when I am on my road bike next time out.

I find most people friendly enough. Had a roadie stop the other week to see if we needed help with a flat (we were on MTB's on the road). Commuter's on MTB's don't tend to bother, probably just intent on getting home, same as me. Doesn't really bother me either way.

I don't always greet people however if I register a greeting I'll always respond if it's safe, but sometimes it may be a very late or not safe to do so. That said sometimes I'm aware of a cyclist but I'm mentally dealing with other things on the road & working out what I'm going to do etc. Thing is don't get wound up about it, you have no idea what the other person is doing or exactly what is happening a few 100m behind you that's effecting them.

This thread propagates the maxim that people will always think of something new to divide and distinguish their-selves from others so long as it establishes a sense of superiority in belonging to the more 'noble' tribe.

My experience has been that the lycra-clad racer type is more likely to be an arrogant so so and so, but that is just because these are the types one often comes across in London; there are plenty of decent cyclists of all ilks. One could find obnoxious persons amongst mountain bikers, and *gasp * even folder fans.

Generally, these arrogant types tend to be those that hold theirselves to be amongst the elite, or the hardcore of their said groups - ie. those with least to offer out-with their desire to be seen as a Platonic form.

Sorry, I haven't read the thread, but I get the gist. I'm getting tired of paranoid hybridists feeling sorry for themselves that other cyclists aren't enthusiastically waving HELLO all the time.

I ride an MTB, a mudguard equipped road bike and a carbon Dolan road bike, and (here it is), I do not ever wave at cyclists who I do not consider to be 'into' the sport.
