Do you always need rim tape?

I have just bought a Mavic wheelset and the inside of the rim is totally smooth. The spokes are held in with Mavic specific nipples and nothing protrudes through. The rims came with a bit of tape stuck over the join which is welded, otherwise the inside of the rim is very smooth.

Do I need to use rim tape?

I have never had a set like this, deep rims I have seen have holes through to hold the spoke nipple - all advice much appreciate. Thanks

You don't need rim tape.

are these for tubeless tyres?

Mine are clinchers. Tyres now on and pumped up to 110psi with no rim tape - they haven't gone bang yet! Though won't be trying on the road until spring. We have approx 400mm of snow at the moment so couldn't if I wanted too.

Many thanks

Rim tape is to protect your inner tube from sharp(ish) edges & to give it support so it doesn't expand into orifices thus bursting. If your rim doesn't have sharp edges & then orifices well you don't need rim tape!
