Since moving recently I now only have to cycle 6 miles each way. If everything lines up I can do it 20 mins but so far it hasn't taken longer then 30. I don't have a car so the alternative is 20 - 30 min walk to the bus stop then a 20 - 30 min bus ride followed by a 10 min walk at the other end and the same coming back. And all at the times they choose to run buses. At least cycling I can travel when I like.
The downside is the roads. One pot hole is getting bigger by the day and there's a whole section now where I have to ride in the middle of the lane to avoid the horrible surface to my left. Luckily it's a fast section so I'm not really holding any one up. There's another section with so many manhole covers that you have to weave left and right to avoid them. I don't like cycling on these roads after dark but at least I'm saving a lot of time and money.
