I live quite a walk at either end from appropriate busses and it'd cost me a fortune & be very slow. Tram, much the same but nicer to be on.

Driving is a hateful experience that could be used as my Room 101 punishment.

Cycling is lovely and direct and cheap and I can pick and choose whether to mix it on the road or take quieter less direct routes

I feel guilty about this but here goes.

My commute to Heathrow is now so miserable that I've lost all enthusiasm. I can't cycle through the CTA tunnel any more (see my Heathrow Thread) so I have a 40 minute ride, a 10 minute wait, a ten minute bus ride and a ten minute walk. All this is about 15 minutes longer than it takes me to drive.

What with the stress off the traffic, awful road surface, winter weather, punctures etc I find I'm actually much more relaxed on the days when I don't ride. I never thought I'd say that!

Obviously I'm getting excercise and saving a bit of fuel money, so I'll continue to ride a couple of times a week, but I no longer care if there are days when I can't use the bike. I just drive and feel less anxious and less stressed.

I probably need to do some cycling that isn't to work & back, but on a 4on/2off shift, there's precious little opportunity. Hence my current downer on cycling, I suppose.
Happens to us all. Just remember, you are already a cyclist, you are under no obligation to prove anything to yourself...life and work is hard enough without adding guilt into the mix.

I think you are right...there are other ways to enjoy riding, perhaps take a cycle trip,abroad...maybe ride to Paris or some place a couple,of hundred miles away for a few days...get your riding mojo back another way and don't stress about the commute.

I got the bug back after many years when I got a job 5 miles from home and it seemed a no-brainier as the facilities were really good.

that led to finding this place and joining a club.

I've not ridden much in the last year, but I'm now doing a 40 mile round trip to work 3 times a week, and every time I have to stand all the way on the train, I'm determined to go 5 days as soon as fitness allows...

if you have a long hilly commute say 10+ miles, it can start becoming a drudge some days. but looking at the alternatives - urban driving or multiple public transport - cycling wins every time.

I love cycling, I sold the car months ago because I never used it.
I go every where on the bike, work is only 4.5 miles away, but never go the direct way there, I find different ways to go there, on the way home I have found a little canal path, which keeps me off the busy main road, but it can get a little muddy when it's been raining.
this morning I did 7 miles to work, and 9 miles on the way home.

Every now and then I get the Metro, and normally enjoy it. Feels like a bit of a treat not having to get changed, and it also means I can have a pint after work. However, if I have any more than 3-4 days without riding I start feeling miserable.

If I have to take the bus I'm a horrible human being, more than usual...

If the journey is a bit full on, traffic dependant, it can get a bit monotonous but I know how I feel when I don't cycle. I really am bad tempered for the day. I used to hate that it was for work but now I think of it as 'my time'.

I take breaks whenever I need to. Usually cycle 3 or 4 times a week to work. Used to do a whole 5 days a week but lately I have other commitments (combined with laziness and also want to watch a movie before going to work), I sure don't commute as much as I used to.

I don't feel bad about it either.

I simply cannot ever ride to work. I feel bad about that. The closest to a cycle commute was when I had to get the car repaired and I put a bike in the back to ride home on. Did the reverse when the car was ready.
