I'm beginning to think that you are as daft as me SW, just in a different way :okay:
Once rode my mountain bike on the beach here & never again. certainly wouldn't dream of a road bike on the beach

The ride was on sand with concrete underneath, with areas where the sand can easily be 25cm high.

I rode there on Monday and it wasn't half as bad as today so I didn't think of taking the MTB  but from now on and until March, I'll take my MTB

I'm not sure this is the best technique but I find that a low gear and keep pedalling works for me. Many times I thought I was hitting the deck but keeping the pedals going saw me ride through to the other side in one piece

Me, daft? I'm sure of it

I don't like sand. I did a bit of cyclocross for a few seasons, there isn't often sand on UK courses but when there was (and it often was a long-jump pit!) I often found myself eating it. The trick was indeed to let the bike do it's thing and concentrate on the pedalling.

I used to see riders who were faster than me, come to grief in it, as they'd have 'a death grip' & were fighting the bike, whilst I'd ride past as they were spitting sand:angel:

Obviously later in the race, particularly on a damp day, reasonable compaction of the sand occurred

Got some lanes here that have sand build up after rain washes it off the fields. I usually manage to pedal through but have had a couple of "moments". I wouldn't want to ride much distance on loose sand tho' - well not on a road bike.

I just know that I don't like unexpected sand. In Rendlesham Forest I watched a little lad ride straight into a patch on a track and go splat. I called out to my son, who was about ten at the time, "Watch out for the sand!"

"What sand?" Pedalpedalsplat.
