Do you ever fail to relate a near-miss to a loved one so as not to worry them?

Had a that-was-damn-close moment today when a motorist pulled out of his driveway on my right side and swung his car into my way (while in a cycle lane) and who then shouted at me that I should have braked. I've long got past the point when I no longer relate every minor incident to my other half, but I'm also thinking of adding this one to the mental achieve. (Other than sharing it with you lot. ) How about you?

I've only had two serious near-misses, and both times I've told my wife.

If I have a minor incident, I don't bother relaying it, because I don't want to give the impression that cycling is dangerous.

Usually not, unless I'm still shaken enough that she asks me what's up.

I've told her about the knob in a Land Rover who hassles me every time he encounters me, just in case he eventually does kill me.

On the few occasions when I can't just shrug it off, I tend feel a strange mixture of anger and melancholy when I get home. Telling my wife about it helps to get it out of the system and into the past. (A stiff drink helps too.) Perhaps I'm being selfish. She tells me her bad stuff so it's not all a one way street.

If I do try and tell Mrs V... she just tells me to man up and get on with it as she commutes herself by bike and knows what it can be like

Only had one near miss when a big Volvo 4x4 estate stopped at a side junction and reversed back very fast without looking properly. Mrs A_T was on the back of the tandem at the time, we managed to haul the tandem out of the way with a sideways shuffle. She gave the driver one of her Paddington hard stares.... he was so apologetic. Ha!.

I don't say a word. My other half worries anyway without me making out that it's dangerous out there. She doesn't like me doing my new 8 mile commute. I found a route that's mostly country roads that she preferred only to find they're closing the road on 13th October for 8 weeks. My previous commutes have all been across town on cycle paths.

Definitely worth checking how 'closed' the road is. One of everyone's favourite roads around here, Watery Lane, Battlesbridge, is 'closed' at the moment to cars, but still passable for pedestrians and cyclists, which makes it all the more pleasant. It's even disappeared temporarily from Google Maps but it's definitely there, I rode along it tonight!

And to the OP, I don't tend to worry SWMBO with tales of near-misses: partly because it might worry her and partly because they tend to be you-had-to-be-there type stories. So far, at least.

as for the 'road closed'i have turned up at a closed road on my bike when they were doing a full proper resurfacing and they just waved me through but told me not to ride on a certain bit that was freshly laid

as for OP i never bother telling family about near misses or bad drivers apart from after every ride i come in and grumbe 'normal mix of nobber mercedes, audi and bmw drivers!' (not slagging off all drivers of said cars but they are my worst 3)
if i told my mum about every near miss or bad driver she would have me of the road quicker then i can ride

I used to tell her about some of the pratts I encountered but she told me stop telling her as it worried her too much. She always tells me to be careful when I go out as she's a nervous cyclist.
