Do you find watching the robotic Olympics unsettling

TBH, I remember watching one of those action films where 'the president' is being saved by his bodyguard, and they were on a fishing trip, when a 'swarm' of drones arrived to attack. I was a bit like 'that's a bit far fetched'. Nope, that's all changed now, just a few years later - very much a reality of war now.

I mean, of course I was aware of robots, but never knew they competed in their own olympics.
I guess it's so the makers (scientists?) can see them in action against other makers' creations.

I seem to remember a program on TV many years ago where robots competed against each other but not in a gentlemanly race.

I never watched more than a brief glimpse whilst changing channels but it was the sort of program Craig Charles (Red Dwarf?) would have been appearing in.

He was indeed a presenter in the first series (1998-2002)

There was a later series, ended in 2018. I think it is still going, but as a Youtube show rather than BBC.

Yes, I'd forgotten Clarkson presented before Craig Charles.

Charles did start presenting in 1998, but it was the second series, not the first.

They are built in humanoid form so they can take over work in factories, shops, leisure etc that humans do now. No need to rebuild or re-tool.

Just slot in a robot instead of a human. ….

except I remember reading an article last year where they actually said no we build them in humanoid form so as not to unsettle humans.

as by far the more efficient setup would not be build a human robot as lots of that moving stuff around is restricted by our skeletal system and shapes, it would be far better to build a bespoke robot to fit factories designed purely around it...at which point you dont need the humans in the factory at all anymore.

and thats the problem

the unsettling thing for me more is Ive watched a ton of science fiction films and read enough science fiction books to know this stuff never ends well for us humans.

Some of them seem to have had them replaced after each race. Requiring upto eight hours to recharge.
