Is it nerves, or is it just the adrenaline 'rush' of 'going into battle' (so to speak)?
I think this explains it for me. Think it's a mixture of exitement and your brain knowing that your body is about to get pushed. If i'm going out with my mates to try and get some segments i feel it most and they have said the same to me.

Dont feel at all nervous in the mornings as roads are quiet at time i leave but sometimes on the way home feel a bit more vulnerable rather than nervous especially now in the dark nights.
Have to say after a slidey moment at a roundabout recently the rainbow colours of diesel on the wet roads has me me filled with nervous panic now  . Its unbelievable the amount at some of the busier junctions on the bus routes etc I've even changed my approach to a couple of roundabouts and corners when its wet to try and give myself a straighter line. Im down to walking pace for some.

Never on the commute. The roads are far far too familiar for that, and given what I do "for fun", the commute is actually quite a dull pad.

When I first started commuting regualrly many moons ago I was a tad aprehensive, but as soon as I started doing 40-50 miles on big hills and dual carrigeways, a 4 mile hop on barely moving roads lost any kind of fear. Or interest.

Although I would add that nerves may not be a bad thing; it keeps you aware. Complacency and over-familiarity anywhere on the road is an evil thing which I will gladly attest to. I've had a fair few near misses where I've turned off for a second or two because of exactly this and I have to remind myself that although I've completed this journey safely and without incident x thousand times in the past, its no guarantee that I will at all times in the future.

Don't get nervous unless i'm going somewhere i don't know the route to etc. in which case by the time i'm cycling i don't honestly care, if i get lost its all just part of the adventure.

The best part of my day is my commute. Riding my bike makes me happy - unbelievably so when riding away from work.

I hear ya! And know exactly were you are coming from....

I don't get mentally nervous (except when it's icy/very frosty) but I do find my stomach plays up on bike days. Butterflys and what not.

Most odd but it seems not unusual.

As long as it doesn't outweigh the pleasure of riding I don't think there's nothing wrong or unusual with getting a bit nervous - it keeps me alert and stops me daydreaming my way into accidents. Unfortunately however, by far the most common reason non-riding friends give me for not taking up cycling is that they are nervous about having an accident. I also have one friend who did ride but won't now because he got too nervous. It's a tricky balance.

Haven't cycled since last week - back playing football and legs are suffering!

Am getting pre-match nerves ahead of this evening's ride...
