I guess the worst thing that ever happened to me was some 35 years back when I had what I thought was an awful boss who talked to me like I was a small child - mind you I was in my early twenties at the time and I was an arrogant oink who needed setting on the straight and narrow!
The work place has generally changed for the better over the years, certainly in the sectors I have worked in. Way back when I was a shop floor trainee the management was a one-way command stylee. Somewhere along the way, hierarchies were flattened and there was a greater emphasis placed on collaborative teamwork. As the MD of a company a couple of decades later I have to say that I was often impressed by the contributions that many youngsters used to make both on the job and during meetings where their input was welcomed.
I don't think that it is a generational thing in terms of workplace attitude. There are youngsters with poor attitudes that will never get anywhere and oldsters likewise afflicted who have never gotten anywhere either. On the upside there are some terrific 'kids' who will do well and will really fly and of course there are those of older years who already have.
I loved watching youngsters getting on and making something of themselves. They were fairly easy to spot. They tended to get stuck in, tried to sort things out themselves, didn't bitch too much (we all do a little!), saw the bigger picture and often were not star performers in their current role - not that they were bad, it's just that they didn't quite perform 100% as the role constrained them a little.
