I guess the worst thing that ever happened to me was some 35 years back when I had what I thought was an awful boss who talked to me like I was a small child - mind you I was in my early twenties at the time and I was an arrogant oink who needed setting on the straight and narrow!

The work place has generally changed for the better over the years, certainly in the sectors I have worked in. Way back when I was a shop floor trainee the management was a one-way command stylee. Somewhere along the way, hierarchies were flattened and there was a greater emphasis placed on collaborative teamwork. As the MD of a company a couple of decades later I have to say that I was often impressed by the contributions that many youngsters used to make both on the job and during meetings where their input was welcomed.

I don't think that it is a generational thing in terms of workplace attitude. There are youngsters with poor attitudes that will never get anywhere and oldsters likewise afflicted who have never gotten anywhere either. On the upside there are some terrific 'kids' who will do well and will really fly and of course there are those of older years who already have.

I loved watching youngsters getting on and making something of themselves. They were fairly easy to spot. They tended to get stuck in, tried to sort things out themselves, didn't bitch too much (we all do a little!), saw the bigger picture and often were not star performers in their current role - not that they were bad, it's just that they didn't quite perform 100% as the role constrained them a little.

Pardon me for my mini rant but...

...My last boss was an absolute arse, he and his equally idiotic father/business partner screwed me over and spoke like no man should to my heavily pregnant sister

My boss is great, when I enquired about cyclescheme, she just gave me the cash to buy a bike.

But then I only work for a small(ish) company, and do plenty of unpaid overtime!

Generally all of my managers are pretty good. From the duty shift managers to the big boss, they have all come up through the ranks to their postions and do treat the staff with the respect we deserve. That is not to say they won't bollock people if/when the occasion arrives though.

The trouble is, I think a small minority of young people see what's happening in the latest Reality type show and expect to get instant riches and don't want to accept it's a long hard graft.

My current boss is the worst I've ever had. His constant boast is "I'm a very good man manager". No he isn't, he's a gossip, slags his direct reports off to each other, lies, suffers selective memory loss, and takes credit for others achievements. Quite simply the most unprofessional man I have ever worked for. Fortunately my opinion of him is shared by many others, so we just get on by ignoring him, and make sure we hit the targets the company owners want, knowing that it is only a matter of time before he falls flat on his face.

I once worked for a part of GEC-Marconi that was developing an In flight entertainment system, those things you see in the back of chairs in airliners. The project was in crisis, suffering time and expense overruns, as usually seems to be the way. GEC-Marconi had imposed a three year pay freeze so lots of staff were leaving. Several MDs were moved in and then removed when they failed to sort out the problems. A new MD was appointed and immediately started throwing his weight about and shouting at people. More people started to leave. A lot of them were highly skilled contractors so they're not going to stay around to be shouted at, not unless the money is particularly good. At one meeting he gave a demonstration of his management technique at a management meeting at which a senior manager of GEC-Marconi was present. After the meeting was over, he felt a tap on his shoulder. We didn't see him again. He was not my line manager though. He was great. My colleagues were great too, a real bunch of comedians.

Hmmm. Do we share a manager?
