Always.

If someone has held off and waited, I'll throw a thumb up as they go by.

If I pass a junction and someone has elected to not pull out, or into the junction, I let them know that I know they could have gone, but didn't for my benefit. I figure it endorses their good behaviour.

Also, if I'm at a set of Red lights and a cyclist blitzes through them, I make a gesture to any motorist in sight to show them that I freely acknowledge that it p1sses me off too.

All of the time.

Every chance to thank a driver should be taken. The more we try to make it less 'Us n Them' the better. I even nod at drivers for not pulling out in front of me when I have 'right of way'

Cheers - Lee

Same here; try to make them feel good on the basis that some other fellow may have the benefit of their future good behviour.

Absolutely, regardless of mode of transport, always give a wave of thank you for considerate driving. As said, manners cost nowt

Reminds me though, when driving the car, nothing annoys me more than people who don't give acknowledgement when you've just stopped and let them through somewhere.

I thank a driver when I can but when deep on the drops at high speed it can be difficult to give a sign of thanks that is recognised.

+1 - I sometimes have a joke with a driver and say something like "why didnt I think of that" as they ride on through the lights.

Usually several times, just in case they missed it the 1st time. Doesn't matter if I'm cycling or walking, as others have said Good manners cost nothing & leave a good impression.

Never thought of a 'thumbs up' always use a smile, nod or wave but it's probably easier. Will try it tomorrow when I'm back at work.

This morning a van overtook me too close, then he got stuck behind a right turning car, so I passed him. As he approached for the second overtake, I did what I am coming to think of as the Mikey Hand Jive (a pushing out motion with the right hand) and he did an excellent overtake, so I gave him a clear thumbs-up sign. It's good to talk, even if in sign language.
