Hello All,

Just wondered how many of you fellow bicycle commuters also use a car, How many have dumped the car and why, and How many have never had a car licence ? I have to admit that I do have a car for family use (I'm the only one with a licence !) but in winter time do not use it very much, summer time it gets used a little more as I do a bit of family camping. Somewhere between 1500 and 3000 miles a year. I think some years I do more on my bike.

wife and two kids plus relies

plus a hefty old shop every week for the above

I most certainly do more miles riding than driving

Hello User3143,

I to used to drive a truck for a living, this being one of the reasons why I don't drive the car alot ! I changed my job early this year and now work for the local council. I'm down as a driver but think I have only driven 5 or 6 times this year as a relief driver. Much better less stress, shorter hours but the down side is less money of course !!!

We have two cars - mine hasn't moved much in the last 18 months - down from 18k per annum to maybe 3 or 4k.

I commute by bike, and have only used the car for work a handful of times (less than 10) in the last 18 months. Only use the car if it's wet and icy, or need to be somewhere.

Still keep both cars - running kids about, etc. The daily driver is a Yaris, so dead economical. My car is 6 years old and the wife's is nearly 10 - both looked after, so no need to change.

Have license. Don't drive though, and have never owned a car. I've never felt the need. What would I *do* with one, after all?!

I have a car which I drive about 50% of the time. This month I haven't cycled the commute as I came down with this bug that's taken about 3 weeks to shift (still have a cough). I now have to summon up the will to get back on the bike.

I am doing about 2/3 cycling to 1/3 driving on work days since starting in June, average dented due to crap weather recently, scared myself on the ice !

I sometime shave to cart a large laptop, so that was a reason to not be able to use the bike but have realised it can be lashed to my panniers.

I like to use the bike whenever possible but a lot of my driving involves dropping kids off.

Aiming for more next year, have done 1000 miles this year (since June)

I do love cars thought, not going to do without one, it does mean I only put fuel in once a month or less, more than halved my monthly fuel cost but the amunt of bits I have bought has been a lot more, lights, clothes, tyres etc

No car for me.

That's not because I am greener than Kermit it's just that I have a van I need for my work and that does just fine.

We were always a two car family but, when relocating, deliberately chose an area where we could cycle or walk to local amenities. Two years ago I was able to sell the second car which put some money in the bank and has saved a small fortune since. Now I only use our one car if absolutely necessary (which isn't a lot) and cycle or use public transport most of the time.

We have a family car which is used for shopping and taking the kids places (the car is a Citroen C3) I have a van which was used for a window cleaning business which didn't work out  and I only use the van when really needed one week I didn't use the van once

Sometimes have to lug quite a bit of kit about for work so do tend to use the car more than I'd like.

Galaxy TDi for the family ( 2 kids) and Fiat Panda 1.2 ( new one) for the 15 mile commute. 50 mpg and £75 insurance for 12 months for my wife and I.

Prefer riding in though.

Sadly my commute is 18miles the first part on a narrow dangerous A road, so i car the first 8 miles, then cycle the last 10.

The last part, most of which is quiet private road by the river. Bliss.
