Dodgy gear changes

I have a brand new Carrera Subway and the gear changing is odd. Lets say I start off on the highest gear, gear 7, and I'm in cog 3. If I go down to gear 6 the gear will not change to gear 6 until I go down to gear 5.
Once I'm on gear 5 the gear will have gone down to gear 6 and the chain will make a noise as if its still trying to change gear, gear 5. But it won't change to gear 5 until I go down to gear 4 and so on.
How do I fix this problem?

Put it in your biggest gear; large ring at front (3) and smallest (7) at back. What exactly happens when you press shifter to go into 6?

If it doesn't go into 6 smoothly then you need to tighten cable by turning barrel adjuster anti-clockwise a little; perhaps a quarter turn to start with. If it jumps into 5 skipping 6 then cable is too tight, so turn it a little clockwise.

Nothing happens, i just hear a noise of it trying to go into 6 but nothing happens until I go down to another gear.

As above turn the barrel adjuster anti-clockwise, small amounts then retest.

Thank you, that worked apart from one thing. When I'm on gear 1 and 2 they seem to change to each other, say I'm on gear 1, it will go to gear 2 then go bak to gear 1 and so on. The chain is also scraping against something when I'm on gear 1 and 2.

The chain is not meant to ridden in the large chainring at front and large sprocket at back as chain is stressed, so scraping might be normal. It should go in no 1 though and stay there so try very small increase in tension again.

If you use the middle chainring at front can you get all the rear gears smoothly?

As above, the chain will be rubbing on the derailleur

Watching all of it will help you understand the rear derailleur,

but you need to follow him from 1min 25s with regards to the barrel adjustment, all you need will be covered by 3min 3s.
