Does anyone else hate : The term "Push Bike"?

I may be sad, but I really hate the term push bike! In the CTC newsletter I have just read references to Mandleson & Kerry Katona riding push bikes.

I want to say to them that you push a pram and pedal a bike or bicycle or cycle whatever term you use.

When I hear the term, I think of those really heavy bikes with old coppers riding them, leaning over from side to side trying to pedal those rather high gears!

Oh, yeah. Although, even worse, IMO and for no rational reason, is the insurance company term of "pedal cycle".

Sadly, though, with a selection of bikes in the garage, 1/3 of which have engines, I am always asked "what sort of bike" I'm just popping out on for a quick ride.

Bike-with-motor and Bike-without-motor are the terms I'm using currently.

I hate the term bike.

I prefer bicycle unless I am in a historical frame of mind whereupon anything other than ordinary is unacceptable.

Never bothered me. Nor bike, nor pedal cycle neither. Have to say, 'bicycle', tho' it doesn't worry me, sounds a tad prissy. Can't imagine myself saying to someone 'Is that your bicycle?'

Push bike grates a tiny bit, but I'm not really that bothered.

Push bike just seems to be the accepted way for the masses to differentiate between a bicycle and a motorbike. It's never occurred to me to dislike the word, although I don't really ever have cause to use it.

Biker - motorcyclist

Cyclist - push bike rider

Over here we tend to say 'cycling', but I notice that Americans and Canadians often say 'biking' when they mean cycling. As in "I biked there" rather than 'cycled'.

Frankly, does it matter, as long as you're riding the thing?
