Why do you think someone on the shop floor would know if it had a camera? Management would know as they put them there. But its their store, they do not have to tell you anything.

I worked for security services for over 30 years. If you do not want to be on camera, do not leave your house and keep the curtains closed.

A good example: There was a murder in Hull. The offender left his house, found a victim. He raped and murdered her and was home, all in 20 minutes. They had hours of CCTV footage of him.

Wherever you go you are being filmed. You are being tracked by your car, your watch, your phone.

It has never bothered me.

Why would I expect someone on the shop floor to know? I worked in management for over 37 years, in that time I grew to learn staff appreciate being in the loop as far as is possible or necessary. I suggest a device like this being placed ten feet from the tills might require some explanation to the staff from the store management. Not doing so would be poor man management in my view and lead to rumour, conjecture etc.

I'm not sure the Hull rape and murder is relevant, I'm sure we all know how CCTV works and it's real value to the security services.

In my first post I stated "* Yes, I know, I'm filmed everywhere but not quite so blatantly." If I use a major supermarket, I think it's Tesco, but can't recall for certain, I am filmed at the checkout. There is a notice at each checkout warning me of this. That's fine, I'm informed. I'm going to double check but in this instance at B&Q there is no signage I'm aware of.

This device is no less than putting a camera in my face and taking an image. For me that's too much. I know we're filmed everywhere, that doesn't worry me, shoving the camera in my face p1sses me off........and I’m the customer.

My local B&Q has cameras in the aisles and elsewhere to deter/detect offenders. It has the most obvious ones at the self-service checkouts where you can see the image of yourself being recorded as you scan your items.

Warning signs are prominently displayed and I'd be very surprised if your store was any different.

Those devices, as already mentioned, are normally used on sites for remote security monitoring. Perhaps the store's normal system has malfunctioned and this is a temporary remedy.

Whether cameras are in your face or discreet, they're doing the same job and it's legitimate provided the warning signs are displayed.

There is a good chance that is only actually active when the shop is closed, given the type of situation they are normally deployed for.

AIUI, from their website, it won't be all that much use for detecting things happening when significant activity is expected and normal.

Yes you are the customer and there's probably a camera on every aisle, all of which are filming your face.
Why? Because customers cannot be trusted.
Is your real problem that this particular camera isn't discreetly positioned up in a corner?

They lied to you. Its an Orbis mobile CCTV station. The Dibble typically buy them and lend them out at theft hotspots as a deterrent.

They do this even though research upon research shows CCTV provides little to no deterrence, does nothing to reduce crime, is a poor detection tool (divided up among the number of cameras each detected crime is reckoned cost £800,000), so its a waste of everyone's time and money.

As so many organisations do, they can now point to it and claim theyve actually done something.

Yep, they did. I have two objections to these devices. Number one the B&Q staff directly lied to me and secondly they are positioned at the tills in such a manner that every customer has to walk directly by them, it's impossible to avoid. There is no signage to say one is being both scanned and monitored. Admittedly in our local B&Q there is a very old and tatty sign on the entrance door about CCTV being in operation. These things though might as well stick a camera in one's face.

No, my problem is these things are stood directly in one's path and appear to both scan and film every passing individual. There is no signage to indicate this is happening. Yes, we get filmed everywhere. In some supermarkets one is filmed at the till and one can watch oneself on a screen at the check out. I'm happy with that as I'm told what's going on. These B&Q Orbis devices are a direct intrusion and B&Q doesn't have the decency to tell customers what is happening.

They are appearing widely in other retail outlets.

I have abandoned some pee stops after spotting signs saying that CCTV cameras are located there to catch flytippers!
