No hair dryers - and, following what @Phill057 said, I'm not sure that I'd agree with installing them. Personally, I haven't needed one for my hair since I was about 17 (a paper towel is now more than sufficient to polish me up after a wet ride) but I'm also the only person in my house who owns one, neither Mrs Norm nor either of the Smalls have ever felt the need for one.

Knowing the levels of H&S BS to get a toaster, a stand-alone hair dryer is a pretty high risk item and would almost certainly be subjected to frequent and costly inspections. And, ultimately, for what purpose? Should the company also be providing fresh towels (cheaper and more arguments in their favour than a hair dryer?), or soap and shampoo?

We have a decent shower room at work, although I'm the only one who cycles so no-one else uses it. I have a decent micro-fibre towel, I'm pretty sure that I get more than I would expect my employers to provide already.

I don't really understand your argument.

I'm sure most employers want to provide adequate facilities. Why should they provide showers when you can wash in the sink? Should they need to provide hot water? You can wash in cold, right?

A hairdryer is not subject to "frequent and costly inspections"
To the OP, it's probably just an oversight on their part, and I see no reason that they would be offended by you asking for one.

I have never seen anyone use the one in the male area.

The things men get up to in changeing rooms:eek:

I'm sure it is. As I was drying my hair in the corridor the other day, another lady came out of the shower room and said she'd been asking them to install a hair dryer for two years! I backed her up and asked for one and they've agreed... just wondered if I was being unreasonable so thought it would be good to hear what facilities everyone else has. I only have a 2 mile commute so normally just shower before I leave the house and freshen up when I get to work. However, if I had a longer commute and needed to shower at work every day (including washing hair), the lack of a hair dryer would really put me off as I have long hair that takes the best part of 4 hours to dry naturally (and looks horrendous!)

We got superb showrs, a secure card controlled changing and drying room so it's safe to leave our kit there all day. I think asking for hairdryers is taking the biscuit - no one forces you to have long hair.

Fair play to an employer that fits them, but in terms of asking for it I think that's on a par for asking for manicure facilities in terms of cheek.

They shouldn't provide showers, that's why I said I get more than I would expect.

And all electrical kit is subject to inspection. Sticking something electrical with a plug into a room with a shower would, IMO, require above average scrutiny.

Lol. Actually, I asked for a plug socket. Apparently, due to health and safety, they have to install a hair dryer that is suitable for the wet conditions in our unventilated changing room. Men might not realise this, but hair dryers are an essential piece of kit for many women.

This is true, I don't usually wash my hair when I get to work, but if I've had a soaking on the way in I definitely need a hairdryer if I'm to present myself in a professionally acceptable way.

Dripping on the punters is not acceptable - and my hair takes literally hours to dry left to its own devices.

This is rather a narrow perspective. We have excellent facilities, the building management people want more cyclists as they want to avoid turning more green into asphalt car parks when we grow by 300 staff next year. Reportedly, the cycling community more than pay for itself in reduced car park provision.

No it isn't, but you aren't the only one to mis-read my posts and, if I may, have applied your prejudices to filter what you're reading.

If you need me to be blunt, it is trying to put in a touch of realism by saying that I think I am doing well just having a shower room. I think someone who has changing facilities, showers and lockers is pretty well served and should maybe be thankful for what they have. If the hair drier appears, what next? Towels? Tumble driers?

Some employers provide that, I know, but I rather hope that their employees recognise the benefits they are getting...

Showers, hair dryers, changing rooms, I wish. Baby wipes only, and disabled loos
... as I'm sure Fossy would.

We have a shower but tbh its only less than 5 miles, also it doesn't have ventilation and so you just end up as sweaty as you got in, I tend to use baby wipes and shower before setting off.

Would love some of the facilities some have like shower, dry room, locker space and all sorts. As mentioned I had most of that in my last job but not decent security this new place has the security but not the facilities, swings and RABs I guess.
