Walking the dog this morning along the shared use path that I frequently cycle along (and come back complaining about dog walkers!)
It's a wide path, I was on one side right at the edge the dog behind me -spot a cyclist approaching on the opposite side.
He was still a way off when the dog decided to cross the path and was right on the edge -same side as the cyclist. I was in front when the cyclist got to us, and despite having plenty of room between me , him and the dog -he cycled straight at my dog making him literally jump out of the way.
I hate wandering dogs in the middle of the path as much as the next cyclist, but I'd never deliberately cycle at one -as much because I don't want to fall off my bike as not wanting to squish a dog - especially not when I had two metres of clear path to choose from.
Weird.
I went for a ride later and was pushed into the nettles twice by other cyclists not wanting to give an inch, so it's perhaps just the day for it.

Maybe he was expecting you to call your dog close to you so that he didn't have to mind out on both sides, after all your dog wandered to the other side of the path so he may have been anticipating your dog walking back to you as he approached.

Neither agreeing nor disagreeing just a possible reason.

You are as much at fault as the cyclist for failing to control your dog after you had seen the cyclist approaching.

when there's a dog on one side of the path, and the owner on the other, I'm always very wary of riding between them as i assume a startled dog will bolt for its owner, which is right across my path... so with all due respect, i'd much rather the dog and owner are on the same side. I'm not suggesting a dog and its owner do not have the right to meander, i just don't like going between them.

Same with groups of pedestrians when they just move to either side to allow me to squeeze through... can't you just all step to the same side?

You could well be right.

It's surprising how very often dogs and their owners are on opposite sides of the path when a cyclist is coming. Why? I hate cycling between the two because I fear that one will cross in front of me, so what is best to do?

Or indeed a lead of similar length to your fuse.

I think cyclists often behave quite appallingly on shared paths. It's as if cyclists are trying to take revenge after being bullied on the road.

I saw a thing on the telly the other day about Whipsnade zoo. There were two baby penguins that were being hand reared because their mothers had rejected them. Eventually, they were reintroduced to the colony. All the birds that had previously been bottom of the pecking order set upon them and pecked and harrassed them. The keepers said they just had to go through it, in order to be part of the colony. I think wherever there's an underdog, that underdog will find someone to peck if they get the chance....

Some cyclists on shared paths are a nightmare. I was using the Leeds - Liverpool canal path on Friday, a group are coming towards me on the correct side, me "loads of space" so not going for a swim, this moron thought he would over take them right into my path, I slightly moved and shoulder barged him, dragged him off his bike and gave him the thrashing of his life then dumped his leaking body in the canal... carried on
