dogs....do you slow down for them?

Yes, if you want to cycle quickly on your commute without hindrance from pedestrians, ride your bike on the road (ok not in central London as they step into the road without looking at every opportunity)

Otherwise, give way as you should on shared paths

I thought it was another thread like mine when I encountered some dugs.

https://www.cyclechat.net/threads/dugs.180799/

For wean-eating Devil dugs that come bounding out of farms towards you, I don't stop.

If I see someone with their dog in front, I'll slow down and give them plenty of room. But that's more to do with the fact I'm uneasy around strange dogs and try to keep out their way.

Although, I did pass a horse who almost threw its rider off. And I did slow down for it.

I always slow or stop for dogs on shared paths..the clue is in the name, but I do wish some dog owners would understand that;

I don’t love you dog, I don’t even like it.

As its charging toward me, I have no idea if it’s being friendly or about to attack.

I don’t think it’s cute or funny that its barking and snarling at me
.
“He doesn’t like cyclists” is not an acceptable excuse...it’s your dog, control its behaviour.

You should be prepared to stop for anything or anyone on a shared path.
You should know your stopping distances and keep to them wherever you are.

I usually free wheel slowly past dogs and speed up again afterwards. I always thank dog owners and pedestrians who stop at the side of the path for me.

I've mentioned this on the commuting thread but are planners just idiots? There are two rec grounds on my commute, both with dogs, and the geniuses decided that the cycle part of the path should be right next to the grass and the pedestrian bit the other side furthest from the greenery so you get kids, dogs and adults constantly crossing your path as you cycle through.

Perhaps they should dig the cycle path up if it's such a problem.

I have to say some of the comments on here would only need "car" substituted for "bike" and "bike" for "dog" and they'd fit right in to the daily mail website's comments section

EDIT - I don't even have a dog.

Sounds like the one round the corner from me in Sutton...it's not an issue...you just have to take care

Yep, one's that one by the footy ground. And it is not a problem, I cycle it every workday (thanks for the sarcasm guys btw. Was it called for or are you planners?). I was musing about the logic of planning paths like that. Surely, it is more convenient the other way and only takes a modicum of intelligence.

Hmm no that one I don't think so as you couldn't have the cyclepath running by the other facilities. It makes sense to have the big area for peds. Otherwise you'd have a cycle path running through the middle. Ultimately cyclepaths can be used by peds or bikes, the onus is on the cyclist to take care and yield priority. The rec is avoidable by taking roads anyhow, where do you go after the rec? Right up Collingwood?

Not talking about when you first enter the park on the Sutton side, I just think for most of the path it would be more sensible to have them swapped as it seems more people use the grass and the play area than the skate park. The other one iI go through is up by Cheam and that has absolutely nothing on the side of the ped path until the turning for the supermarket. The entire rec ground is to the right of the cycle path. That definitely should be the other way round.

Nonsuch along the A232...yeah it was that cycle path where I came a major cropper back in 2009 while thinking I could go off the path and avoid a schoolgirl, too fast, lip too deep, went flying and my knee is knackered for good

Coming out the park now towards Cheam, I don't use the cycle path, I just use the road. I use the path when coming from Sutton and going into the park, but much more carefully now...lots of cyclists don' seem to understand that we ride on the left though!
