It never ceases to amaze me just how many people have experiences with dogs chasing them etc. I regularly take mine out running along side the bike. We also meet loads of cyclists and joggers on our walks and she never tries to give chase. It's all about training and as usual, some owners are just lazy and can't be arsed.

3 years of cycling and plenty of miles, only been chased once by a dog, alsatian type that gave up after 20 yards.
Protecting his territory I guess, saw me off and went back on guard

Had a closer near miss when 2 cats ran across a busy main road right in front of my wheel

This is probably 99% correct, but the lure of the chase may win over even well-trained dogs on occasion!

When I first got my dog (18 months old) he used to bark at and try and chase cyclists, now he pretty much ignores them. Motorbikes are a different thing though, got to keep him on a short lead if he hears a motorbike....

There was a thing on the TV News last week, IIRC, saying attacks by dogs are on the up. As a recumbent triker I've only ever have one that looked determined to take a chunk out of me, black lab' hackles up coming flat out at me. I used my Air Zound* when it got within 6 feet of me and it stopped dead in its tracks and looked bemused.
In my DF riding days I had one come at me showing a lot of teeth so stopped and kept the bike between me and it and while backing away, aimed solid kicks at it when it came around the bike. It eventually lost interest before I made contact with it.

*With 100psi behind it it produces enough sound to make my deaf ear ring!

If I want to play with a dog I'll ask the owner first, if the owner wants me to play with the dog, they should ask first.
Oh yes, and does the dog know??

Cindy will run up to you and want to play because she is just a bit exciteable, but won't actually do anything. It can be disconcerting if you don't know, yes, I understand, but if you attack her unduly (this 'robust' and 'suitably violent' fashion of which you speak) then.... well, you can forget your oh so holier than though attitude.

She's just a rather bouncy little 3 legged dog who wants to say hello, and yes, she might be a Staffie, but don't hold that against her, they aren't all 'Devil Dogs' you know (she's quite small for one anyway).

Would you kick my disabled dog?

These anti dog people seem to think that everything is oh so black and white, but, a dog is like a child. You can control them most of the time, but not ALL of the time, and unless you are some sort of Savant, I doubt you can keep your attention focused 100% all day every day.

They think it is right to attack animals (sometime it might be for legitimate reasons, but often it isn't really) and then, when shock horror, the owner responds these people then act all surprised as if they somehow are the the victim and the dog owner is some sort of moron.

Well get this, injure my dog needlessly and you, yes YOU will be fair game.
Yeah, like a small child. If any dog comes running at me, I will assume its going to attack and behave in a suitably robust and violent fashion.

Well I can understand your feelings towards dogs, afterall, you've never had any dogs so don't know what dogs are really like, you just assume they're all vicious because that what you've seen on the news or read in the newspapers, even the tiny toy dogs so your instincts are to kick out. When a tiny dogs comes up to you in a playfull manor wagging its tail you'll assume it's going to savage you, so you'll find a weapon to beat it half to death to save your life when in fact it just wanted to play, that's perfectly understandable. So you just continue doing what you know best.

 Priceless!

Interesting this idea of 'asking' like it is a High Society Dance out of a Jame Austin Novel. Some dogs might be trained well enough, but even the best get a bit distracted sometimes and you don't have much choice, the dog has come to see you instead!

No need to be violent towards it though  (as I say, if you are, then don't expect me to stand on doing nothing).
