as my whole commute is just too far for my unfit body, i've found somewhere i can dump the car and ride the rest of the way.

this is the return leg

as i'm getting back to fitness, i'm not doing every day, so i can take all the change of clothes in to work on the car days to save rucksack or panniers

anyone else do a bike segment in a long commute?

i do a bike-train-bike commute when the weather is set-fair. which is a frikin lottery this year :cursing:

WHen I first started (many years ago) I used to drive in and ride home, then ride back the next day and drive home.

It was 23 miles each way, which I found taxing at first.

Once I was comfortable doing it one-way, I took the bike.

I rarely cycled more than three days a week, but that was nearly 140 commuting miles p/w at a good speed, so I could eat all I wanted to.

I've also (because of parking restrictions at work) done the drive-half-way thing. It worked very well, but for some reason I was always worried about the security of my car when I left it in a lay-by. Seems silly now, as it was never touched, but I used to get a little tingle of worry mid-morning and knew there was nothing I could do about it.

A bloke at our work drives part way and then rides in. I take the mickey as he only lives just over 20 miles away from work and he is a lot fitter than me

Last year I was doing a part car (circa 14 miles) and part bike (7.5 miles) commute each way...physically it was no problem but I found I was rushing round like a mad thing fitting everything in, so I knocked it on the head.
Up at 5am..walk dog for 15 minutes, cuppa, wash and out the house, load bike in car, 30 minute drive to village, bike out and 30 minute race to work to get there before7am. Same routine in reverse at night. 10 hour days, plus 2 hours a day travelling, trying to get back to pick up the wife...sometimes its just too much. Loved doing it, just found it too intrusive in the day. Opted for odd rides in the evenings instead.
Best of luck to you, genuinely , but depending on how you structure the day, it can be difficult.

Good for you Alecstilleyedye. I have a 60 round trip mile commute around the Forth. Its lucky I love my job! I'm never going to have the time to cycle that distance and work in between. Also, part of the journey is properly dangerous for a bike. So I mix it using buses and a Dahon folder. It makes it quite a cheap commute and there's much needed exercise built in for free! Depending on how vile the weather is I do between 9 and 18 miles a day. Most of my colleagues think I'm insane or super fit. Neither is true of course, but I feel the benefits and I love fitting the bike into my daily commute.
