I have the day off as the wife and kids are off to camp bestival and needed a hand getting everything out of the basement and into her mates car. As at a loose end I jumped on the bike to take a quick spin to Bristol to see my injured mate.

So I am 3miles along the cycle path I am flagged down by a very portly and distressed German lady. Her and her partner has hired bikes in Bristol to cycle to Bath for the day and had got a flat. They were frantically trying to inflate a schraeder valve with a presta pump with obviously no success.

The bike came with a puncture repair kit, a compact pump with the valve adaptor the wrong way round and the bikes didn't have QR.

So it was down to me to do something I haven't done since a kid and repair a tube whilst the wheel was still attached to the bike. Ten minutes later the said couple were back on the way and tried to give me a tenner for my troubles which I foolishly said no to.

Good to help a fellow cyclist in distress and now off to deliver a food parcel to my mate with the broken leg, croissants, Stilton and satsumas as that's what he asked for.

No mention of the war but they were from Berlin a city I have had a few too many good times in over the past twenty years. One was from the west and one the east and a very nice of mechanically inept couple
