Ouch....

Ouch indeed. ;)
Besides the obvious 'make backups', I was always taught:

Never (that's never) rely on backups that are not physically in your possession (e.g. clouds)

Never rely on one type of media for your backups.

Never assume that your backups are safe because lots of other people keep their backups in the same place.

Yes, it takes time, but at least I know my data's safe.

Aye, never trust a Microsoft server...

Then again, a large number of the servers on the microsoft.com domain are actually Unix boxes...

Well you can always rely on your BT Digital Vault for backup, ops may be not!

Okay, here's another lost data scenario...

My nephew's Vista laptop crashed this afternoon. He used a Windows recovery disk to try and get it going again. Note that I said 'a' disk not 'the' disk! It turns out he used the XP recovery disk for his mum's laptop. So, he accidentally changed the type of operating system and quite possibly the type of file system too. All of his music, photos and videos have now disappeared and he doesn't have a backup... ;)

I'm pretty sure that he isn't going to be able to recover his files, but am I right or am I wrong? If there is a way of doing this that doesn't cost a fortune, could somebody please tell me what it is?
