Cycling home yesterday, once I got past the cloud of cyclists that is the middle of Cambridge, I stopped at a red light, in primary position.

Young bloke pulls up on his bike to my left, one of those Chris Boardman brand bikes, he's straddling the white line between me and the side of the road.

Light change, I go, he pedals hard to go past me... Okay, let him go, then he slowed down... I allowed a Vauxhall Corsa behind me to pass, effortlessly drafted it past the other guy, got to the next set of (red) lights comfortably before him.

Waited for them to change, sitting in primary, he passes me on the left and straddles the white line again. So, when the lights changed, he went hard to get past me, I let him, waited, and passed him when he slowed again, this time without cheating.

Next set of lights... Can you guess what happened?

This time he at least turned off quite early on after the lights had changed.

Its kind of dull; I don't want to race, I want to go at my pace, and if you're faster than that its okay, but if you're slower I don't want to keep passing you. Stop making me spank you, its tiresome.

...sheesh. Roundabout way of boasting how fast you are. Why not just say "I passed the same bloke three times last night" and be done with it?

(See my thread about scalping to understand why I'm now so peeved)

I really don't care about 'scalping', and I'm not racing the guy. I actually get quite fed up with people like this racing me; I want to go at my own pace and largely ignore everyone else, but I can't do so when they're going at a variable pace and using red light stops to overtake.

The guy was going off fast from the lights and essntially getting pooped by doing so, hence I was going past him again. Even if you're looking to race someone, surely that would be dull as hell?

Tell that to the folk on BikeRadar - they have a thread with billions of posts where one cyclist overtakes another cyclist (who does not even know s/he is involved in a commuter race) - and that's pretty much it.

I'm going to start a thread every time I overtake another car on the motorway.

You're not allowed to take your bicycle on the motorway

Good point.
This thread is a bit like that BMW testosterone stuff though, foot to the pedal to overtake someone in a car slower than that.

Not saying Cab was but it does seem to be bragged about quite a bit on here.

I think in cab's case, it would be like the car that overtakes on the motorway, pulls back in and then slows down, which is annoying, and dangerous, if it makes you have to brake and the car behind brakes and the car behind, that's how random tailbacks start...

Phew when I started reading this I thought it was me !
But then I saw the bike make !!

I cycle everyday from St Ives to Cambridge and must admit chasing down other cyclists and trying to over take them is part of the fun, it gets my heart rate up and gives me something to aim for

So if you see a 40 year old thinking he belongs tot he US Postal team then thats me !!

I could brag about a daily 'score', but it doesn't really interest me. If I wanted to race I'd go join a cycling club and race; it irritates me when someone keeps doing what this guy did.

I'm with you Cab...and i do try to scalp other riders
But to scalp someone, then not have the legs to keep ahead is a bit stupid / annoying / distracting to the person they just passed.

Yeah, I agree with Cab.

I usually always wait behind people and get the measure of their speed before deciding to overtake. If I know I'm faster, I'll do it - if not, I'll just draft them or let them go and stay behind them at the next set of lights.

It's irritating when people use the lights to get in front of somebody that's clearly maintaining a higher average speed. The roads are dengerous enough on my commute and I don't want to keep overtaking where I don't need to.
