Could it be because roads of today (at least minor ones and even some jokingly called A roads) follow old paths, drover routes, and general ancient topography. From what I've experienced, Dorset roads are not a lot more seemingly illogical than a lot of other counties. We have hundreds of years of history to thank for that, plus all the interesting points made earlier about how things developed. At least it's not boring!
