Downloading illegally

No. It doesn't feel right stealing somebodies work in such an easy way. I don't have a big problem with people who do though. Taping off the radio meant poor quality (and Jimmy Saville talking shite over The Kinks!), and getting a burned CD meant that someone you knew had bought it, and you might buy the original, and you almost certainly buy CDs yourself... I like quite a few 'small' or obscure bands, and they are goosed if they don't sell some CDs! At least as important: I think that there should be at least some effort/control over your music choices. A bit of effort so that you appreciate it more. But then I am a grumpy old (well not that old!) man. Probably a ridiculous sentiment.

Trouble is, i've been doing it for so long...long long before you could buy MP3's etc online, it's kinda habit.

Stealing ? technically correct but (irrelevent in a way) i always worked on the principle that the mainstream musicians i'm interested in are fabulously rich compared to me. How much money do the Rolling Stones for instance want ?

I know it's not right, but DIGAF B) I conduct my life in every other way as correctly as i can.

I'm never too proud to admit i'm less than perfect...no-one, but no-one, is. I just don't deceive myself.

I expected some stick for saying i do, i can live with it...like i said, i conduct 99% of my life as a good human being...which is more than i've witnessed in a lot of people.

Yup. I download music off limewire. Not a lot, but some -mostly old one-offs that you either can't get any other way or can only get through an inordinate amount of cost and hassle. Like I'm going to track down and buy a Charlie Daniels CD (if such a thing is available) just cos I'd like a copy of Devil went down to Georgia? I think not.

Two other things: one, it's not a case of 'It's theft, simple'. Digital theft is different. I'm not saying it's right, just that it's different. If I steal your car, you no longer have it; if I take a copy of your music, you do. And two, I've already bought several CDs that I probably wouldn't have if I hadn't been able to 'try before I buy'. I hear it on Jools; I download a few tracks; if I decide I like it, I buy the CD.

So, it's not that simple. To me it's on a par with making up tapes for mates. That's illegal too, and I've been doing it for 30+ years. So shoot me.

Arguments both ways.

Is it stealing if you download a copy of an album you've already bought? I've illegally downloaded loads of albums and tracks that I already own on vinyl or cd, is that a) illegal or wrong?

Same question for tv shows. I download and watch e.g. episodes of 24 that I've already seen on TV. Is that a) illegal or wrong.

Whilst certainly technically illegal is it morally wrong to download a track or two from an artist I've never heard before? If I like it I'll buy a CD, if I don't I won't but I certainly would never have bought the CD anyway if I didn't first illegally download a sample or two.

I've done the taping of and received copies of tapes/cd's/lp's but am happier if they're bigger names as mentioned earlier.

There's a local lad who I wouldn't copy and would recommend people bought if they like "Folk music from Quernmore" - Ottersgear.

I'll not do anyone a copy but think he's on myspace and if you like it then fill your boots.

(or was it 30) on a Sunday night, but since then I've bought CD's even though Mr Summerdays would rather I just paid for legal downloads - I prefer to own the physical disc. Problem is that my children seem to growing up in a generation who go around swapping music on their phones not paying for it perhaps it isn't different from my taping the Top 40 apart from the quality.

TBF, the record companies certainly are'nt losing any money from me....i think i've only ever brought about 4 albums and a few singles in my life...i never was a record buyer, long long before the option was there to download it.

Small bands, i'd recommend buying the track/album to be fair to them. But i wouldnt buy it in reality, as i said, i've hardly ever purchased any music, in any format.

Is listening to youtube any different..or legal ? Again, its so widespread, if you dont download, you can still listen for free.

I'm not trying to justify myself BTW, it is illegal and i know it

Stealing: The act of taking something illegally.
I download for free. I listened to music for free on the radio. I did not (ever) stop buying music.

At no point have I ever stolen from someone else. Copied yes, but deprived someone of using their own property - never.

I also used to record the top100 every sunday afternoon. I listened to my tapes and bought the stuff I liked. Try before you buy, I say.

Moral dilemma. Is it OK to, say, torrent music that you have already bought, but want it in a different format? As I helped a great deal of artists on their way to astronomical wealth when I had to pay exorbitant prices for their vinyl and CDs, shold I feel guilty if I have simply asked somebody to help me create an MP3 version of a 1970s or 80s album to listen to on my ipod?

I have probably bought about that many from Christmas to now... some physical, some downloaded from Amazon. For me its about MY principles, not what others do.
