Hopefully we can get past sexual tension being the centrepoint of dr who and have some darker material to get stuck in to. I would love to see Capaldi bring a more foreboding and sinister edge in.

Unfortunately this would be fine for us oldies, but for the youngsters who are used to a lightweight Doctor with comedy turns, it could be a turn-off

I just yearn for a return to the 6(?) short episodes to build up a full story with a cliffhanger at the end of each week.

The current format where the baddies get beaten in the last 3 minutes doesn't work for me.

Oh and when can we hear a proper out of this world theme tune (rather than this one played on Earth based instruments)

Question is whether the average modern viewer has the attention span to accept such a format

Slightly disappointed as I was hoping for a more radical shift, like Idris Elba. But a return to the rather more other-worldly and dignified awkwardness of earlier incarnations would be interesting. Lots of the younger fans, who seem to see Doctor Who only in terms of the recent revival, are apparently upset because they thought that the Doctor could only get younger - but unfortunately that would mean he would be the embryo of Doctor Who pretty soon... ;)

I think Capaldi will make an excellent Time Lord. It'll be interesting to see how today's crop of young fans take to a new one who's 20 years older than they've been used to, but if they can get past the wrinkles (and - crucially - if the BBC can get a decent script or three) I think he could be a big hit.

Hear hear!

Apparently he's the same age as William Hartnell was when he took the role!

I'm looking forward to seeing what happens. I'd pretty much given up on it.
As an aside it is interesting to see how age has affected them differently. Hartnell was quite ill and messed up his lines constantly. Capaldi is still very sprightly indeed.
