Extreme heat event cancelled... because of extreme heat

A climate change event in London on how to adapt to extreme heat has been cancelled today because of the very issue it aimed to address.

The event - Extreme Heat: Improving governance and strengthening action around the world - was due to take place at the London School of Economics (LSE) during London Climate Action Week.

"We regret that this event has been cancelled due to the red extreme heat warning issued by the UK Met Office," organisers said.”

Thing about it...its only June. July and August could be worse!

I remember '76. Of course, I was a kid of single digit age and to me it meant unlimited outdoor play. We'd be out the house after breakfast, wouldn't go back until it was time for dinner. Wouldn't even have a drink in the intervening period. Oh to be young and dumb again.

I was in the lower 6th form (or between lower and upper for the latter part of it), and remember it too.

But according to Wkipedia, the highest temperature during that heatwave was 35.9C. I think today and tomorrow are going to exceed that.

What I remember most was how brown everything was, with several weeks without rain.

I was a full time rock climber in 1976. We would sign on, on a Monday get our dole cheque on Wednesday. Get the bus to the Peak District and climb until Sunday just dossing out at the bottom of the crag. When I got home on Sunday and had a bath, my mum and dad insisted on saving the bath water for the garden, it looked like used engine oil.😱

I distinctly remember when it was ended by the intervention of that meteorological god Denis Howell. My sister and I went and sat in deck chairs on the lawn in the rain just for the novelty of it.

My mates Dad was a nice old boy, a bit of a character. He said to me one day in '76, "I've had enough of this not being able to sleep because its so hot. Tonight I'm going to kip in the deckchair in the garden."

And sure enough, it pithed It down with rain!
