And house value appreciation especially in the SE. Million quid really doesn't go very far in these parts!

We are looking to downsize as the kids have now gone and I keep my eye out for cottages when cycling the Cheshire lanes. I get really excited when I spot one for sale but then get home to discover the asking price..

That would buy my house more than three times over!

I don't remember Whiston, mind you it's been a while as I said. I'll have a look on the map.

I fancy moving more into the country when I retire

Shaun
it would buy our current one about 6 or 7 times over

Mrs Marshmella watches that Escape to the country programme . I'd like to know where all these foks get their one million pound budgets from

It's the same as when they look for homes abroad, no one every actually buys anything they're just time wasting door kickers..
£1,000,000 isn't that difficult. Especially for the older couples/late middle aged couples. Lots of second marriages and people moving from London. If they both have a house in London, there is an easy £800,000+. A bit of planning and the extremely sad loss of a couple of parents and their houses liquidated. Bingo, there is you million and some for renovations!

You notice very few of the people on ETTC are looking to downsize!
Sorry, what's ETTC?

Maybe that's the reason very few people ever seem to buy a house on that show! ;)
The TV people find them a house in their selected area, exactly to their demanding spec and £10k under budget, but then they don't like the colour of the gravel on the drive or the light switch in the downstairs cloak (or some other dodgy sounding excuse) and "are still looking"

Escape to the country as mentioned upthread

Not exactly a dream house but when my and my wife were still boyfriend and girlfriend 26 yrs ago we used to pass a derilict house with a bit of a large garden on our walks. We always used to wonder why it was never put up for sale and thought it would make a nice place to live bring up kids. Also as it was derilict we might be able to afford it. After we were married and had our first kid and living in some little house on a not too brilliant estate expecting a 2nd kid, the place suddenly came up for sale whilst we were away on holiday.( 3 years afterwards) My presumptuous father inlaw saw the for sale sign being put up, ran round, viewed it and put a cheeky offer in without telling us. The offer was rejected but they asked for a couple more thousand and he said yes and it was accepted the same day.
He then rang us and told us. Still live there now!
