Druids... did they or didn't they...

Exist.... as some powerful ruling class as some historians claim, whilst others maintain there is no evidence for a 'ruling class' of druids.

is it all just Victorian mumbo jumbo, or is there any actual evidence.

As far as I understand it, 'druid' is an ancient word meaning 'wise man person'... and that's about the top and bottom of it.

So... anybody know more about druids than me?

There's a lot of speculation on that page regarding the 'ruling class' of druids

The druids are notorious for having left little information behind – and the Romans seem to have gone to great pains to make sure their fierce opponents were largely removed from the page of history

or, there wasn't much to tell, hence the druids not having much of a mention in history... in the meantime, let's make it up as we go along.

The bit they are best known for, prancing around at Stonehenge, is definitely modern mumbo-jumbo. It is not and never was a druidic monument - it is far older than that.

the best knowledge is actually from the romans they encountered them all over (and killed them) there is a lot of stuff to read on places like the order of bards ovates and druids and the british druid order prolly a good place to start.

however we have no way of knowing if our current practices are completely accurate, modern druids (we're more neo pagans) have had to piece a lot together from stories, traditions and old writings. its more organised nowdays but i guess back in victorian times it was a bit of a laugh.

when 'suspicion' becomes 'fact' by the end of the sentence, i suspect they're clutching at straws.

thanks for that... very interesting. Very little evidence which may or may not be reliable, depending on how optimistic or pessimistic one chooses to be.
