I use light oil, it works a treat for me. Wipe off the black goo every week with a rag and put a few more drips on, and scrape the black gunge off the jockey wheels as necessary. It works, my chainrings and cassettes last for ages - last chainring did 15k miles.

Same here. Use it summer or winter, very good in wet weather.
Never use solvents to clean the chain.
Mickle-Method: Lube & wipe Lube and wipe. Repeat as often as necessary.
Baby wipes really good for the wipe bit, but a rag will do.
