I actually overtook a cyclist on my way home on Friday who was wearing a full Motorcycle helmet :ohmy::ohmy:.... I was sorely tempted to say something, but wasn't sure what to say... and then the lights changed so I left him/her probably trying to build up momentum with all that extra weight.

wot a load of crock!

i've never heard of anyone's vision being impaired by a road helmet. if you don't want to wear one coz you think it looks like a wok, just admit it.

I'm fairly new to cycling as an adult and have never worn a helmet in my life. I've given a couple of them a try and I find I am hyper aware of the rim of the helmet in my field of peripheral vision. I am also hyper aware of having an unbalanced weight (however minimal) on my head where I'm not used to having anything balanced. I do want to protect my head and was thinking about buying one of these close fitting BMX type helmets. I was thinking about my brothers cycling back in the seventies and just wondered if these old leather helmets were any good, that's all. Obviously I was unaware that a couple of Cycle Chat posters know far better than me how I feel in a bike helmet. The next time I'm shagging my girlfriend I'll phone up buggi and ianrauk to find out how much I'm enjoying it.

It's all personal choice but I wouldn't be without mine. You never know when you might find your cranium colliding with a curbstone or the side of a van etc etc etc... I'd rather wear a 'wok' than break my skull.

Ooh, there be an alliteration in there! Mind you, kerb is spelt with a k.

I really hate those things - when I see kids wearing them cycling to school.... and usually really naff cheap ones too:angry:. I've even seen a 4yo kid on a bike with stabilizers wearing one.

(I'm sure they are fine for what they are designed for, maybe - don't really know)

Most members of the Forum have experience of Helmets , but not of your girlfriend.

However I suspect that as with helmets, compatability, comfort and fit will be of prime importance, as is sampling the market to ensure that you have tried a full range before selecting the one that suits your personal needs best. There is also the question of streamlining, snag points and whether the shape and appearance are aesthetically pleasing.

We could of course help you with your research!

my Helmet is so un noticeable that I rode home from work without it and didnt realize until the next day when I couldnt find it:blush:.

If a helmet is restricting your view theres something badly wrong with it. Go to a bike shop and try a few on.

Is sex a particular problem at the moment? You can get help you know

Sex? No! Why would you think that? My problem is people assuming that they know better than me what my experience of wearing a bike helmet is. Do you know what an analogy is Gavin? I don't give a rat's ass about your petty helmet, no helmet spat. If I want to wear a helmet I will, if I don't I wont. I don't like head woks and wont wear one. I am interested in alternatives, apparently the alternative I was wondering about is crap. Thanks to the first two posters who pointed that out.

Old fashioned "hair net" helmets were to protect your head from scrapes and grazes. Some people believe that modern helmets can do more than this but there is no convincing evidence.

As you've found out the main contribution of cycling helmets is to provide an opportunity for well intentioned but ignorant people to tell cyclists what to do.

I don't wear a helmet because I feel that they restrict my vision and seem to make me less alert to what's happening around me (not good reasons I know) and I'm just not used to wearing a wok on my head. My older brothers used to wear the old padded leather helmets. Are they totally useless from a safety POV? Would you be less at risk from neck torsion injury wearing one of them and can you still get them? Does anyone know? Would I look like a total pillock wearing one (present status: 75% pillock)?

After much research on the subject, I can find no good reason for wearing a helmet other than as a fashion statement. Helmet wearing does not increase your safety when riding. If you don't want to wear a helmet, don't do it and don't feel bullied by those who do, their are just fashionesta...

you probably need to take the peak off the helmet.

You could have started the conversation by saying:

That's a lovely helmet, can I give it a stroke....

I was trying to bring some humour to the thread. I clearly failed and I apologise.
