Dust everywhere!

Does anyone know of a good way to get rid of builder's dust?

We've just had some major work done in the house that I rent a room in, and now there's this very fine white dust everywhere.
It's so bad that I think it's the cause of the irritation in my eyes, which has made them so bad that I may be taking a trip to the eye hospital tomorrow after another visit to the opticians (red, itchy and watery)

I've been mopping the floors every evening for the past 3 days (hard floors throughout, no carpets) and using moist cleaning wipes on the surfaces.

It's very fine, so you can't see it in the air, but it settles everyday, and I'm sure I can taste it occasionally.

But is there a quicker, easier way to get it all cleared?

My sister, even with builders taping stuff up, for her extension, went everywhere.

Even having a small wall (plasterboard) extended caused a hell of alot of dust..... despite the builders doing their level best to sort it.

We've got friends having an extension - they cleaned the kitchen, went out, came back - fine dust everywhere.......

Just keep it manageable. Oh and if you had carpets (which you fortunately don't) do not use an expensive one for the muck.....get a cheap one, then it will be dead.

suffered this when we had the bathroom and kitchen done. Hoover every day, trice a day, three times a day.. juts keep hoovering. Wiping it just spreads it around more.

We had an extension a few years ago and went on holiday for a week when the builders knocked through. It's the only way.

A PC with quite a few fans usually does it for me

Its a pain to clean out as well. But at least it saves me from dusting so often

Same here - mine is a hoover

Plaster dust plays merry hell with Hoover bearings. It might be best to call in professional cleaners for a "Builders Clean". They know what to do, and it is their Hoover that takes the punishment, not yours.

Shop around for quotes, and recommendations. Good luck.

In my house I just open a window at the front and back and then put a big fan in one of them.

Using a vacuum may just re-disperse the settle dust back into the air unless it has a really fine filter on it, then it just gets blocked!

Wet dusting and mopping is the best solution I think. Hanging damp sheets or towels near the entrances and windows will attract dust very effectively and stop it getting into the rooms. Trays of water has a similar effect.
The surface tension of the water will attract dust particles and trap them.

If the builders were any good they would have not only sealed off areas of your house not being worked on with large plastic sheeting but had a huge industrial hoover type of thing sucking in the dust as they worked so it didn't have a chance to settle elsewhere rather like a decent kitchen extractor hood. But hey ho. The average builder is not that bright or considerate. They might suck their punters dry of money but they'll not suck up their dust or clean up .

I tend to agree with this.

(I know, I'm as irritating as the dust ain't I Luke ) Hope the problem is solved quickly - it must be awful when eyesight is compromised.
