Leave it dan. He is just trying to look smart by making that tired old point about Hoover being a brand name for a company that makes vacuum cleaners and the name has become a generic term to describe the item (like Bic pens etc). It is about as impressive, amusing or educational as being stuck talking with an accountant at a party.

Its not a smart point. Its defamatory to Hoover to call them when you mean to criticize Dyson
Its a bit like blaming a cyclist for a road accident between a car and a bus and then trying to say they are all means of transport so its ok to criticise cyclists

Our Dyson does a great job, the downside is the weight as it is a workout to get it up stairs. We also have a handheld version for the cars and doing the stair treads in the house, this model is even better.
Henrys work well, are lightweight, move around easily and are the cleaner of choice for contract cleaning companies.

The hoover industry hasn't been fubared by the EU, they've stopped companies using the power consumption of the hoover's engine to deceive people into believing they're buying better/more powerful hoovers. Lots of manufacturers were using cheap inefficient engines, you're much better off with an efficient 900w device than an extremely inefficient 1600W hoover!
Its telling that manufacturers use engine wattage (very cheap to increase in an arms war with other manufacturers) and not suction power (difficult and expensive to increase) as their big selling point.
One Dyson. Wasn't bad when new but slowly got worse and even buying a load of parts didn't get it back to like new. I also hated the swirling dust cloud when you had to empty it, even doing it carefully into a bag wasn't perfect.
We now have a Miele c** and dog. Still not perfect, a few things have broken on it but it does the job.

I think I discovered another make with a cardboard version of that which fits the Miele but unfortunately I'm afraid I can't recall what it was. You'd think they could make it out of cardboard though.
