How does it work?

If I was to put a bid in for say 40 quid and the highest bid up to that point is 25 quid - does my bid show as 40 quid or just a value more than the previous highest bid?

I have a limit in mind for an item but don't want to bid too much if it shoots it automatically to the limit and I could have got it cheaper...

Apologies for being so thick ;)

NO...it shows up as £25 PLUS the minimum bid incerment

you put in your maximum bid and it will auto bid the minimum to make you the high bidder. I'm shoot at bidding though I only ever win the 'buy it now' auctions:biggrin: Anything else I always get pipped at the end and all I've managed to do is drive up the price for the seller. however I've had a couple of second chance offers, where I've been offered the item at my last bid price as the original winner has pulled out. I tell these folks to sling their hook, I assume they've had a mate bidding it up to make sure they get my maximum bid out of me.

wait until the later stages of the item- until it's on the day it's due to finish. If it's past your amount, leave it. If you bid too early, it can increase the price of the item as people go to bid over time. If you put £40 on - it will increase up to the price of whatever the highest bid was - if the highest bid was £30 - then it'll show you at £32/£35 until someone outbids you

Thanks Tollers and MacB.

I had also been thinking about whether I would be pushing the price for the seller if I bid too early or if they had someone pushing it up....

I have only ever used buy it now previously.

Now the natural question is Noodley- is this a bike related purchase?

I can't answer that - you might be Bidder 2 or Bidder 4 ;)

Let's just say I might not be on the forum in about 19 hours and 25 minutes time....

If it is don't post a link on here. You'll be outbid by a fellow CCer ;)

I've got my eye on a frame, but scared to post it on here in case someone else likes the look of it.

I won't bid until the last day and see what the price is like then. But I also have never won an auction.

edit - Cross posted

Best ebay advice is to be online for the last few minutes of the auction. Set youreslf a maximum price and bid that price at about 7 seconds before auction ends.

Good advice, its the only way I ever bid on ebay.

If you show your hand too early, there is always the chance that seller may use dirty tactics to bid his item up!

Not that I would do such a thing:blush:;)
