use sniping software, utter no brainer, honestly

I use esnipe but there's a few to chose from, it sticks your max bid on a few seconds before the end so it stops bidding wars, stops anyone counter bidding and makes sure you stick to your 'max price'

Went for 100 quid, which was a bit less than available online - so somebody got a nice bargain.
