I sold a broken iphone on ebay for spares or repair. The purchaser couldn't fix it and wanted to send it back and I said no. It was escalated to customer services and they decided in the buyers favour. WTF is going on there?

They always go in the buyers favour now. Mrs 3BM sold a coat, after about a month the buyer said it wasn't the described colour and complained to ebay rather than contacting us, they just gave her a full refund, we had quite a to do with them about it but all the could do was quote the mantra. Don't use them anymore, complete and utter nobbers.

If you sold it for "spares or repair" then I don't see how they can say you did anything wrong. The buyer mucked about with it after purchase which may have caused more damage.
They don't always come down on the side of the buyer either. Bought from one of the many shops on there & the item arrived shrinkwrapped, "as supplied by the manufacturer", unable to check what is inside without opening it & if its opened then it can't be returned. They came down on the sellers side.
Manufacturer doesn't shrinkwrap any item they have already boxed.

I get the impression that the complaints process is automated until a definite decision has to be made at the end - then it is down to one individual to decide.

Mistakes can happen or it may have been your error - may be worth asking ebay.

Did you select the "For parts only not working" section in the drop down menu or "Used"?

It definitely starts from the position that the seller is at fault, no doubt about it, how else can you raise a complaint with ebay before you have even contacted the seller to try and resolve the situation?

"For parts not working". I also stated in the listing that it was for spares or repair and that it was broken and that I did not know why it stopped working.
The resolution centre implies that the decision is final. What is the appeals process, just email customer support?

I wouldn't bother, annoying though it is, you won't get anywhere except for being infuriated with robotic generic responses.

I used to be a large volume seller on eBay, selling foam earplugs.

One person went straight to eBay saying the item haddnt arrived an hour after hitting the BIN button.. They got a refund despite my repeated attempts at making eBay see the glaringly obvious. This particular buyer had 40 feedback, every one positive...but every single one was a negative comment from the seller, saying the buyer had claimed the item had not arrived.

Had another saying the earplugs arrived squashed, they got a refund... They are memory foam earplugs.. Physically Impossible for them to stay squashed

eBay is a breeding ground for scammers, and eBay seem to be fine with that.

I'm a big ebay fan, but I was amazed at their total indifference when I provided chapter and verse on a seller who was clearly selling a succession of stolen bikes. "Are you a policeman or acting in a similar official capacity?" they asked. I said no, I was just a person. They said they didn't act on any reports from anyone not 'acting in an official capacity', and that was that. And yes, the guy carried on selling stolen bikes (roughly one a day on average). (And ebay, of course, carried on getting their 10%.)

Update - The buyer returned the phone and ebay refunded him the cost of the phone and delivery charges. He had to send it back to me at his own expense though.

It was a small amount of money but I was thoroughly fed up though so I appealed through the resolution centre with very low expectations and won! Ebay have reversed the decision and given me my money back!

I conclude:
  1. I have my money and my phone back
  2. The buyer has most of his money back and I believe that ebay do not now take it back off him
  3. Ebay are out of pocket by the cost of my broken phone
  4. I can only conclude that the appeal was the first time a human had reviewed the case
  5. Ebay must save more money by using this automated resolution centre process than it spends on reversing appeals
  6. I'm chuffed:cheers:
