Hello and :welcome: to the forum.

I'm no EM expert but if it's a professional it's a really nice bike with good quality components and Reynolds 531 tubing but would be earlier than 1981. Does it have chrome fork and drop outs? If it's all painted then could be the Giro D'Italia. Is it orange? These were made by Falcon but there were also models of a much lower quality which were just an attempt to cash in on the name. Falcon was bought out by Elswick - Hopper in ‘78 and models changed. We needs pics really. If you're not allowed to post pics yet post a link to a photo sharing site.

That's a proper one, and they are very good (notwithstanding the Italian BB shell). You can date them from the frame number. E is 1981-84 and C is 1990-91. The above-BB cable guides say 1981 is probably correct, as you were told.

Look after it!

It's an interesting crossover model, too - the old logo on the forks but the new one elsewhere. I expect they had a lot of older fork crowns left over. The newer fork crowns had the EM bike logo (see pic).
