Hi, just wondered if anyone can suggest an appropriate cycle route into Edinburgh City Centre (Waverley Gate building at Waterloo Place) from the North - I've cycled as far as the Western General before so in via Cramond to Silverknowes then along the Roseburn Path, I know this extends to Haymarket so I could drop out there and make my way to Charlotte Square and along George Street (bit of a detour), or I could drop out of the path at Craigleith and follow Queensferry Road into town (bit busy), or follow another route on the North side via Stockbridge area as suggested by Edinburgh Cycle Streets - any other suggestions? Any of the above would work, ideally I'm looking for the quietest route!

Cheers, Mark

Best bet would be to come out at Haymarket and go along princes street. Queensferry road is an accident waiting to happen mate so do yourself a favour and avoid it like the plague

from the cycle paths you go pass Tesco's in Cannomills, through the tunnel out to "The Yard" and then up Dundas street. Dundas street isn't that busy and is quite wide. I personally avoid going down it. But going up is part of my daily commute.

Are you crossing Inverleith Park to get to Canonmills? I'm not aware of a cycle path that goes that way - happy if there is though!

If you get to the junction at craigleith from the north take the first left. This will take you up over the bridge at Crewe toll. Follow that path all the way down to a junction in paths called 5 junctions. It has 5 paths off it. Take first right along golden acre path (signposted). Follow that all the way to Cannonmills. Part of my daily also. Good paths

The first time I done a journey like that I just followed the NCN1 all the way to George St.
Before I left Edinburgh I found it best for low conflict without length diversion to exit the NCN just north of West Coates Road and meander down through the residential streets to West Coates Road, take the left Roberry/ Landowne Crescent, take a left, then right, then right, then left to get to Melville St. Follow the cobbled street/ cyclepath to Charlotte Sq, do a left then right then left into George St or cut down instead to Princes Street from the Square. Something like this.
Or if traffic flows/tram works facilitated it rather than going into the quieter streets I just stayed on West Coates/ WestMaitland/ Atholl/ Shandwick Place to Princes Street.
Cycle Streets gives a few options also but they tend to involve routes to the North, I find staying on the NCN/ Roseburn Path simpler.

Here's my route this morning.

I come from Leith. But if you are coming from Cramond via the paths it should be an obvious link. I think the Cramond paths would be a good route because you will usually get a tail wind when you're cycling along the Forth. should be pretty speedy.

Had a look on the cycle routes website and like the look of this one, can use a short part of Ferry Road then get onto the cycle path and along Goldenacre to Warriston, should be able to find my way into town from there! Many thanks, Mark

If its the section of Ferry Road I thinking of, If you follow the NCN up to Craigleith, you don't have to touch Ferry Road but you need to cut back down to Crewe Toll. That section of Ferry Road isn't bad though, the junction to rejoin the cycle path (near my old flat) is a bit big however, and may be time consuming to traverse.

I noticed you can cut back down the cycle paths, I know the road so don't feel too worried about that stretch so long as I miss out Crewe Toll R'Bout!

I used to go through it somedays but I was always cutting down right to West Granton Road (going the other way) its not as bad a rbt as rumoured but if you can avoid it I would do. Depending on the lights iirc he best way was to cut down left to West Granton Road and take the right lane and use its Toucan back to the path or instead at the lights take the right lane and immediately use the toucan and cross back over the old railway bridge.

I did this route this morning, good route! Followed the path I know to Silverknowes, short stretch on road along Ferry Road then up onto the Crewe Toll bridge and followed the cycle path to the 5 junctions - took the Goldenacre Path and then a tunnel next to Tesco at Warristion - that popped me out into Scotland Street so I had a wee stretch of cobbles then right at the roundabout and up the hill to Omni, so perfect for Calton Road where the car park entrance is. Thanks for all the advice, hopefully I can find my way back! Regards, Mark
