El Camino - Spain

I returned from a month in Spain on August 25th 2010 a very enjoyable cycling trip

First two weeks involved cycling the Camino route from Hendaye in France south from Irun via Pamplona and west via Viena, Santa Domingo, Burgos, Carrion, Valencia De Don Juan, Villafranca Del Bierzo, Astorga, Sarria, and Melide to Santiago and on to the coast at Fisterra

Starting on Sunday July 25 we reached Santiago ten days later on Wednesday August 4th finishing on the coast the following day.


After a weeks rest in and around Santiago and Fisterra we headed for the north coast ending up in San Sebastian on Monday August 23rd

Spent 22 days on the bikes averaging 50 Kilometers per day travelling over a total of 1100 kilometers (685 miles)

Great pictures thanks for posting. looks like you had some great weather on your trip. Looking forward to my first European tour this coming May.

done the Camino in 2006 but on road bike we had support cheating i know but a great trip .
mind you i would hate to push a fully loaded bike over some of those big passes .
we met one guy who had a quiet a serious load on his bike ,nothing light weight that's for sure ,we offered to take his loaded panniers to the top of the mountain but he said it was his pennants and he would go it alone .met him in Santiago at the end of our trip.
anyway great photos brings back great memories of our Camino tour.

Probably said penance , a lot of people still do it for religious reasons

Just being slightly pedantic (and to help anyone looking for further information) there are lots of caminos - and several that go to Santiago di Compostela. This one is the best known whose official name (IIRC) is the Camino Francés but there is also one that follows the northern coast, one from Portugal and one from Finisterre, and the Via de la Plata which runs through the Estremadura.

indeed. camino is simply the spanish word for road.

I went for a 4-day tour of the Picos de Europa in the spring of 2010, without really knowing what it would be like.
It was absolutely stunning, with big mountains and spectacular views - one pass was at 1 mile above sea level. The seaside towns and villages of Asturias and Cantabria were lovely too. Great food, especially the seafood.
I keep banging on to my friends about how great the Picos region is.
