I've met quite a few guitarists over the years who do that.
initially i bought the wrong strings in error, but bunged 'em on anyway... never looked back

One day i'll get round to putting the set of electric strings on my 12 string cricket bat... currently i find it nigh on impossible to play... but it is a 'cricket bat' of a guitar, so i'm not holding out for much hope..

What makes it difficult to play?

lack of talent!

the current set of acoustic strings seem very tense (as was my 6 string acoustic before i put leccy strings on it), Plus, when finger picking i often only hit one of the two strings (the thin harminic string, which sounds shite)... it's a very different beast to my other 6 strings. I mostly play a nylon strung classical, so my fingers aren't the strongest on the block. Then there's the look of the thing... it was very cheap but i couldn't pass-up on a LH 12 string for £40 ...its soundboard looks like shuttering ply, and in spite of it being a proper lefty, the manufacturer (lakeland guitars) have managed to put the brand transfer on the headstock upside down! If i still don't get on with it after trying a set of lighter electric strings, i'll donate it to something or someone.

I did buy a new guitar last week, but have not yet bought any spare strings, Last time i did they were 'tape wound' for the electric guitar and wire wound or nylon for acoustic, now the only tape wound strings on a quick search seems to be wire with nylon tape winding. is that right?

I found the extra light Rotosounds great for my 12 string. Also you should tune it down....puts less pressure on the neck.
Perhaps the action needs lowered if the previous suggestions don't help?
