I'd use a bit of armoured, and run it off a spur from the existing shed socket circuit.

Mind you, my garage is still fed from a bit of 2.5 T&E strung on a catenary wire... it's on the list of things to do, and whilst not ideal is compliant (ish).

Buried cable does not need to be SWA, it can be standard T&E as long as it I'm mechanically protected(I've in a pipe or similar).

What the OP proposes is not Part P as it is only an extension lead and not a fixed installation.

Therefore, the OP just needs to consider the risk of hitting the buried hose pipe and going through the cable, and perhaps take into account any grouping factors.

At home I've had a buried cable in hosepipe arrangement to supply the shed for over 15 years without any problems.
However at work last year I went through an armoured cable with a mattock.

Just saying.

What you need is a bit of flex, anything you've got laying around will do, bellwire if theres nothing else. Stick a plug on either end of it and run it into the shed. Double socket in the shed, one plug into that, one plug into a socket in the house. Turn switches on at both ends are you're sorted, using half of the double in shed for power.

Please don't actually do this (though it will work). I've read of an electrician actually finding this at one of his relatives house.

I already have an armoured , rcd cable to the main shed and i would like to run an extension to the second shed, could i use a normal cable run through a garden hose buried in the soil ?
It would only be for running a light and maybe an alarm and would be plugged into the 1st shed socket with a double extension on the end .

very dodgy and illegal.

you used to be able to get this plug and play system:

http://www.primrose.co.uk/armoured-switched-prewired-cable-system-p-2321.html

buy i don't know if it is still available or complies with current (ha!) regs

Why is it illegal?

I'd love to have power in our garage but as it's a shared block a little distance from the house and because a neighbour has taken out part of the roof of his and replaced it with corrugated plastic so he can have daylight the rest of us have leaky roofs. It's a rented house and he thinks he owns the block of garages so we don't feel we can do anything.

If you're going to bury it, do a proper job - trench two foot deep, and cap the cable with roof slates before backfilling. And no, that doesn't conform with any regs, but it works and it is safe. I am wondering about getting power to my new shed. It's only a metre from the garage (which has power) but in between is a walkway. I was thinking of stretching a thick wire between the two buildings, above head height, and attaching the power cable to that (it's how the phone line gets to the house). Is that sensible?

Installing the cable at height is permissible and in line with the regs.
