The irony being that the roads outside the school are busy with parents driving their children to school. The worst examples of driving I see on my commute are in and around the various schools.

Isn't it just about the (lack of) cycle parking though? In which case, until the school builds a bike shed just lock the bike up outside the school somewhere.

If I was a parent and my kids school said that I'd tell 'em where they could go. Use the headteacher's bum crack as a bike stand.

I'm not sure a 10 year old should be cycling in traffic. I have been a school teacher and I have taught 10 year olds. Many (most?) do not have the continuous concentration you need to make it safe.

There.

Go on.

I cycled to school, but not till I was twelve.

If safety is the real concern, and I have my doubts, then a crocodile scheme would be a possible solution, they've tries it successfully in London, an experienced rider shepherds the kids along.

Surely its against his civil liberties (if not it should be) to dictate how he travels to school.

On a completely different level whilst our work does not dictate how we travel to work, cycling on works business is banned :-( (health & safety ;)); it used to be OK if there was no other suitable means but now its banned completely, health and safety :-( :-(

Madness but it's probably different out there compared to when I cycled to school. No 4x4 as far as I remember.

This is ridiculous and is yet another case of health and safety gone mad.

Heaven knows how any of us grew up in the past and managed to survive. We would walk to school in rain and snow, even in the dark:eek: We rode our bikes to school without a helmet or hi-vis:bicycle: We played games in the playground that would involve falling over or banging into things (how we managed to do this in the rain or snow I don't know:rolleyes:). We left the school premises to go to the shop at break times:eek: We ate crisps, chocolate and sweets:tongue: Most of us should never have reached puberty.

Back then all the kids used to be fit apart from the odd fat kid that would get picked on. I go past schools these days and there are more fat kids than fit ones. There are more school run mums sat outside picking up kids than there are kids walking home:evil: Then they wonder why obesity figures are going through the roof:rolleyes:

I was at Kew Gardens a couple of weeks ago. There was a school party there, all wearing hi-vis jackets, just to be shown round the gardens ffs!

D4Vow's right, it's all very well banning snack machines and fast food from school, but if the kids take no exercise they'll still have a good chance of becoming great big bloaters.

Within reason, a healthy active life means you can eat what you like.

What a load of balls. The road is congested because of all the other parents driving their kids to school because the road's congested because of all the other parents driving their kids to school because the road's congested........It's a vicious circle, that will take a BRAVE few to break.

Well done to the little fella and his mum for having a go.
