I've had a Kettler Ctr1 for several years and have used it sporadically.

I had been thinking of selling it as my commuting miles will be enough. But then the weather's kept me at home and I'm losing ground on the cycling front. I'd rather not buy a turbo trainer if I have something that can do a similar job.

Are these a good supplement/alternative to getting out on the bike?

If so what's the best sort of program to run on it? I can set it so that it's the elliptical version of spinning, undulating with gentle climbs, undulating with hard climbs, a straight climb getting progressively harder(even fit this one used to grind me to a near stop by the top) or any combination of these.
