Well, not quite but almost - discovered that my rear wheel was buckled and had a broken spoke.

Seriously fed up.

I now have a collection of four broken back wheels and one that has rare hub spline that I can't use.

Shimano hubs, Open Pro rims and 3 cross spokes handbuilt. They only "fail" when the brake blocks wear the rim down. These days I just put a new rim on myself when one wears down. I have a pair of wheels on the good weather bike which have notched up 45,000 miles. It's the grit of winter that's the problem.

I spent an hour or so mulling over some discounted cheep pairs of wheels versus just buying a new rear as I seem to be flush with working spare front wheels for some reason.

I have a set of handbuilts on my much abused and neglected commuter. Disc brakes so the rim wear thing isn't an issue. I built them myself with Shimano hub, stainless butted spokes and Mavic rims. Currently at about 15k and no sign of trouble yet.

With the exception of the Giant PR2 wheel which has popped a spoke and is now out of true, all the other wheels are true but have failed freehubs - this is the common fault with 90% of my wheels, year on year. Another thing about the Giant PR2 wheels is they were second hand.

OK, I wasn't aware of that but even so I would still be looking for a wheel with a midrange or higher Shimano hub because they do have a reputation for being boringly reliable compared to most of the competition!

Miche Excite Wheel - Freehub won't come off - had it on a vice with a long bit of pipe.
Cole Rollen - Cannot source replacement at a reasonable price.
Planet X - Has a 10 speed freehub with deep splines - can't fit 9 speed cassette. (Was a bad 2nd hand purchase)
